The JAC Sei2 is an entry-level compact SUV introduced by JAC Group for global markets, with its moniker “Sei” derived from Italian, meaning “friend”. Rather than being a ground-up development, the Sei2 shares its underlying platform with China's JAC S3 and is marketed abroad as the “JAC Sei 2”. The model made its debut in March 2017 as one of JAC’s pioneering offerings in Mexico, assembled locally at the Hidalgo plant under a joint venture with Giant Motors Latinoamérica (GML). Positioned as an urban crossover, the Sei2 banks on its accessible pricing, versatile cabin space, and dependable performance to cater to daily family commutes and first-time car buyers alike. Dimensionally, it measures approximately 4,430 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,588 mm in height, with a 2,640 mm wheelbase. JAC has gained significant traction in Mexico, expanding from an initial 19 outlets to a 52-dealership network by 2025, with an SUV portfolio spanning the A- to C-segments.
Styling-wise, the JAC Sei2 adopts JAC's earlier “Eagle” family design philosophy, characterised by dynamic, flowing lines and an athletic stance. Up front, prominent fog lamp surrounds flank an inverted trapezoidal secondary air dam, creating a well-defined, layered look. Projector headlamps and sharp body creases lend the crossover a youthful vibe, while the dynamic dual shoulder lines and the C-pillar quarter glass enhance both side profile aesthetics and rear-quarter visibility.
Inside, the Sei2 prioritises practicality. The instrument binnacle houses conventional twin-dial analogue gauges for clear legibility. The steering wheel offers tilt-only adjustment, keeping things straightforward and functional. A two-tone interior scheme is complemented by silver trim highlights across the centre console and steering wheel, adding a dash of youthfulness to the cabin ambience.
Under the bonnet, the JAC Sei2 is primarily powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated inline-four petrol engine. Depending on the tune and model year, output ranges between 103 hp and 111 hp (around 77–83 kW), with peak torque rated between 146 Nm and 210 Nm. Transmission options comprise a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, and a CVT. Power is sent exclusively to the front wheels (FWD), with the engine tuned to run on RON 92 petrol as standard. Official rated combined fuel consumption stands at approximately 7.4 L/100 km, with a top speed of 180 km/h. Certain overseas markets were also offered a punchier 1.5TGDI turbocharged petrol variant.
Underpinnings consist of a segment-standard setup: MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam at the rear. Stopping power is handled by ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes, paired with an electronic parking brake (EPB). A generous ground clearance of around 200 mm ensures confident obstacle clearance in daily driving, riding on 205/55 R16 tyres. JAC's strategic partnership with Baolong Technology in intelligent chassis systems provides solid technical backing for the Sei2's underbody dynamics. Overall, the suspension is tuned for comfort, effectively soaking up urban road imperfections, while standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control (TC) provide essential active safety assurance.
Despite its entry-level positioning, the JAC Sei2 delivers decent tech and creature comforts. Selected mid-to-high variants boast a large portrait-style floating touchscreen infotainment display compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other notable conveniences include keyless entry with push-start button, multiple USB charging ports, and rear air-con vents.
Practicality is well addressed, with 60:40 split-folding rear seats allowing easy boot expansion while maintaining five-seater capability when needed. All in all, the Sei2 covers everyday urban driving essentials effectively without breaking the bank.
On the safety front, the JAC Sei2 meets the mainstream benchmarks of its era. Built around a high-rigidity safety cage with hot-stamped steel in critical areas, the crossover provides robust crash protection. Alongside dual front airbags for the driver and front passenger, side and curtain airbags come standard, ensuring comprehensive occupant protection. Active safety kit includes ABS with EBD and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP). Brake Assist (BA) and a Brake Override System (BOS) further enhance driving safety. Selected variants also gain rain-sensing automatic wipers. Driver assist features remain straightforward, offering Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), reverse parking sensors, and a reverse camera.
As JAC Motors' spearhead into Latin America, the Sei2 played an instrumental role in establishing brand recognition overseas. In Mexico, the crossover once posted a monthly sales record of 9,000 units in June 2021. Its strong value proposition, compact footprint, and generous kit allowed it to hold its own against rivals like the Nissan March (Micra), Chevrolet Spark, and Renault Kwid. Anchored by the Sei2 and its wider line-up, JAC achieved 95% dealership coverage across Mexico and emerged as a pure EV market leader with a 22.37% EV market share. Industry observers view JAC's Mexican breakthrough as a benchmark for Chinese automotive marques pursuing localised production and a quality-driven strategy. As a mass-market family car, the JAC Sei2 fulfilled its mission as a pioneer in Latin America, paving the way for next-generation electrified models like the E-Sei2.
